Visayas Grid Red and Yellow Alerts on Tuesday, October 27 — 30MW Supply Shortfall
📌 On Tuesday, October 27, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) raised a red alert for the Visayas grid from 5 to 6 p.m., and yellow alerts from 4 to 5 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. Against a projected peak demand of 2,482MW, available capacity was 2,452MW, a shortfall of 30MW.
■ What Changed
· Units 1 and 2 of the large coal-fired Therma Visayas (TVI) plant and Unit 1 of KSPC went offline, and power imports from Mindanao also dropped because of scheduled maintenance at some Mindanao plants.
· A total of 861.2MW of capacity is out of the grid. The number of plants shut down by outages differs by report (15 per GMA, 30 per The Manila Times), and 16 plants are running at reduced output.
· A red alert is issued when supply cannot meet demand and the grid's regulating reserve, and a yellow alert is issued when contingency reserves are insufficient.
■ Tips for Residents and Travelers
· If you are staying in the Visayas, such as in Cebu or Bohol, power outages may occur during the alert hours in the evening, so charge your phone and power bank in advance.
· Reducing the use of high-consumption appliances such as air conditioners during alert hours can help ease the strain on the grid.
