Why do foreigners living in the Philippines call their girlfriends "my Filipina"?

You never hear this kind of phrasing anywhere else. If you have a girlfriend in the US, you don't say "my American," you just say "my girlfriend" or "Jen."

It sounds condescending and dehumanizing. It's as if they see Filipino women as interchangeable, commodified companions. Like you can just pick up a generic Filipina at a store, you don't need to know her name, and if you don't like her, you can return her for another "My Filipina."

I've never said that. But it's usually a certain type of person who talks like that..

Yeah, I hate this. my partner, my woman.. my filipina makes it sound like I bought one.. Once at a party another guy came up and asked, 'Where did you get that one?' You all know where that kind of talk leads 😮‍💨

An Anecdote About a Texas Man

In Cebu City I met a Texas guy staying in the room right next to mine, and he bragged that he divorced his Filipina wife and married her cousin. He called it 'keeping it in the family.' He was drunk when he told me this, and his current wife's face was ice cold. I still don't know why he told me that.

Trust me, even when I call my fiancee 'my Filipina', I never mean it in a demeaning or dehumanizing way. I'm proud of my fiancee. But I always call her 'my fiancee' or 'asawa ko' (my spouse), 'Bubu ko'.
