They just can't learn.
In high school I helped a retired farmer raise chickens. I've delivered calves, milked cows, raised pigs, pretty much done it all. Chickens were the dumbest and filthiest creatures I've ever raised. For health reasons I gave up beef and pork. But I can **never** give up chicken. Those failed dinosaurs have no purpose other than becoming energy for my mitochondria.

It took me a while to realize these guys are cannibals. I went to a small farm and only found out when I saw one eating the carcass of another chicken that had just died.
That's something people who raise chickens have to watch out for. If one gets wounded and the others get a taste of it, the injured chicken gets eaten alive by the flock. You have to isolate an injured chicken until it's fully healed.
So the "just died" chicken I saw was probably eaten alive at first. Got it.
They're such chickens 🐓
That reaction is a reflex, so it happens without thinking, and it kicks in before the rational part of the brain even figures out the situation. It evolved for survival. Just run, spin, flee. It doesn't matter why. All that matters is that they survive more often than they get eaten alive.
And if you've ever raised chickens you know most of them have almost no part of the brain that thinks rationally, so even if they wanted to think they couldn't
