(Hanoi=Yonhap News) Reporter Park Jin-hyung = The death toll from a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that recently struck off the southern coast of the Philippines has risen to 61 dead and 40 missing. The seabed in the affected area has also risen up to 2 meters due to the earthquake, exposing parts of it above water.
The Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources announced on the 14th (local time) that land uplift occurred in some coastal areas of Sarangani and Davao Oriental provinces on Mindanao Island, close to the earthquake's epicenter.
The department stated that the seabed, which was previously submerged, has risen up to 2 meters, and that an investigation team dispatched to the site confirmed that "a wide coastline, coral reefs, and seagrass beds have been exposed (above water)."
Photos released by the department show corals spread out above the water across a large area, with dead marine life scattered around.
As a result, the department reported that the coastline has been deformed in some areas, with the shoreline shifting by up to approximately 200 meters from its original position.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PhiVolcs) explained that this phenomenon occurred due to the movement of the Cotabato Trench, located in the vicinity of the earthquake's epicenter.
Meanwhile, the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) announced that as of now, 61 people have died, 40 are missing, and 1,403 have been injured in the strong earthquake that struck the southern coast of Mindanao Island on the 8th.
Additionally, over 173,000 households, affecting more than 724,000 people, were impacted. Approximately 9,900 houses were completely destroyed, and another 54,000 were damaged.
Furthermore, a total of 725 infrastructure facilities were damaged, resulting in losses of approximately 1 billion Philippine pesos (about 25.1 billion Korean won).
The Philippine government stated that it is providing approximately 67.6 million Philippine pesos (about 1.69 billion Korean won) in financial aid to affected households and is making all-out efforts to restore damaged infrastructure to deliver relief goods to residents in the affected areas.
