What should I know before traveling to the Philippines? I'm planning to stay in Manila for the first month, then head to Bacong in the "Negros Island" ๐Ÿ˜‰ area. I've seen some simple houses where I could live the quiet life I like. Are there a lot of affordable places to stay near the beach or off the grid?

Some say Manila isn't a place to stay long, so you should get out of there quickly. There's a comment recommending Iloilo, and in the provinces, even places connected to the power grid reportedly lose electricity for a few hours a day.

Get out of Manila as soon as you can, don't waste a whole month there.

In the provinces, even when it's "grid-connected," you're off-grid for a few hours a day.

Be polite. Even if someone annoys you at first, don't show it with your face or a loud voice. You are a guest. Look for a book on Philippine cultural values. Adapt to them (you don't necessarily have to embrace them). Utang na loob, hiya, pakikisama,
