The Dilemma of the Education Crisis, as Shown by the GN XIV Controversy
Can we talk about this issue for a bit?
I've always loved the horror genre, so I look forward to the TV Halloween specials every year, especially Kabayan (it's back, I noticed). I know it's super nerdy, but I debate with my close friends about the topics featured on the show and how the stories were told. KMJS has done good specials before, and although the quality dropped sharply a few years ago, this year's was decent, so I enjoyed a few of the segments.
But I'm really disappointed by this "backlash" over the "Ukit (Carving)" segment. Is the education crisis in the Philippines really so bad that people turn something with no problem at all into a sensation?? From what I saw, the segment had a clear story and ending, and the culprit was mentioned three times. People are blaming KMJS and demanding a public apology to the Paete carving community, but it clearly said that the carver is a true craftsman and has nothing to do with the supernatural!
It's laughable. KMJS is apologizing because viewers have poor reading comprehension? The show's format is super easy to understand, and yet many people still didn't get it? Social media is really something, it gives courage to idiots. And if you justify this kind of behavior, how are those people ever going to learn??
Oh my goodness!
That episode was really malicious. It implies the sculptures have some kind of spirit attached to them. Then it has Pio Padul saying he keeps sculpting even though strange things have happened with his carvings. That's so insulting. As if it's some kind of crime for a master sculptor to keep sculpting? Even though they made it clear at the end that the bad spirit was in the wood, his work is already tainted with a horror-story image. It also hurts that they burned his sculptures. The people of Paete take pride in it, and they specifically picked Pio Padul's work as the gift for the band. And since you're talking about comprehension, if the sculptures weren't the source of the bad energy, why is the segment titled 'Ukit (Carving)'? The one silver lining is that the market for his work is high-end buyers. They're not people who'll believe just anything.
The teaser posted a few days before the November 1 broadcast made it look like Pio Padul had something to do with possession, and only at the very end do they quietly say the cursed wood is to blame. What exactly is unclear? It's obvious they controlled the narrative to fit the episode's horror theme. Nathan himself, the case study, criticized KMJS after watching the episode and feels sorry for Pio Padul. He said the production team assured him that Pio and Paete wouldn't be harmed. On top of that, KMJS knew before airing what impact this episode would have on Pio Padul and his industry. The admission that they were in the wrong came from their own side. So don't be so high and mighty about an education crisis when it's clear they sensationalized the story. There are already plenty of problematic KMJS cases, and most of the topics they cover aren't exactly brain-boosting. Aren't they, who just pick up TikTok trends, part of the education crisis too? Rethink your argument. I've also posted evidence along with this comment.
To add, in last Sunday's KMJS Halloween episode, they even turned Julie Vega's story into a horror story Oh my, just let Julie Vega rest in peace
You asked 'how bad is the Philippine education crisis,' but that sounds like it's directed at yourself. That episode was malicious. Even though they said it came from the wood, the way they presented the story says otherwise. KMJS bullied him, and bullied the art of carving too.
