Caution Advised When Using Passenger Ferries Due to Frequent Maritime Accidents
On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, a fire broke out on the 'MV June Aster' while it was sailing near Coron Island, Palawan, Philippines. Out of 132 passengers on board, 76 died and 13 remain missing.
About a month earlier, on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the passenger ferry 'MB Princess Aya' capsized due to severe weather in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines, resulting in 34 deaths out of 100 passengers.
We urge all Korean residents and visitors to take extra precautions for your safety by referring to the guidelines below.
<Safety Guidelines for Ferry Travel>
- Please prioritize using officially licensed, large-scale vessels, and always check weather conditions; refrain from boarding if severe weather is forecasted.
- When boarding a vessel, share your route and estimated travel time with family or acquaintances.
- Locate life jackets immediately upon boarding and it is highly recommended to wear them during the voyage.
- We strongly advise against boarding a vessel while under the influence of alcohol.
