๐Ÿ“Œ At around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, November 2, a 36-year-old Chinese man was arrested at the Louis Vuitton store in NuStar Mall, South Road Properties (SRP), Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City, for allegedly using the credit card of a lawyer living in Metro Manila via Apple Pay to buy 18 luxury items worth P2,704,700. The cardholder noticed the purchases from the payment alert text messages.

ยท The man reportedly bought 18 Louis Vuitton items in 4 separate payments. The cardholder says he never authorized the payments.
ยท The lawyer who owns the card received text alerts from the card company and reported the charges. Mall security guards apprehended the man (citizen's arrest) and turned him over, together with store staff, to the Mambaling Police Station (Cebu City Police Office Station 11).
ยท According to Bombo Radyo Cebu, the man is from Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, and was staying at a hotel in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City. Police believe he posed as the cardholder. How he obtained the card details has not been disclosed.

โ–  Investigation and current status
ยท The man is set to be charged with theft in connection with the Cybercrime Prevention Act (Republic Act No. 10175).
ยท The charges are at the police investigation stage and have not been established in court.

โ–  Tips for residents and travelers
ยท Keep card payment text alerts and app notifications turned on, and if an unfamiliar charge appears, ask your card company to block the card right away.
ยท Regularly check the list of cards and devices registered with Apple Pay and other mobile payment services, and do not send card numbers or photos of your card through messengers.
