Cebu child sexual exploitation material investigation — Meghan Markle's half-brother named a "person of interest"
📌 On Thursday, November 5, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said that, in connection with a case in which material suspected to be child sexual exploitation material was found on electronic devices handed over in Cebu, authorities are treating Meghan Markle's (Duchess of Sussex) half-brother Thomas Markle Jr. (60) as a person of interest. He is not yet a suspect, and it has not been determined who owned, produced, or distributed the material.
■ Background of the case
· According to Philstar, on Friday, October 23, Markle Jr. handed over his electronic devices and belongings to the Central Visayas Regional Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking, and on Thursday, October 29, the police (PNP) obtained a court warrant and examined the devices.
· About 7,500 photos of minor boys and girls and 1 video were found on the devices, and some of the children appear to be 10 to 11 years old. In the police's initial forensic examination, suspected material was found on 1 of 3 SD cards and 5 mobile phones.
· GMA reported that the material came from a device linked to his father, Thomas Markle Sr. (82).
■ Investigation and current status
· Secretary Remulla said, "There are circumstances pointing to the possibility that the son was involved, but he is still a person of interest and is not being treated as a suspect." Based on witness statements, authorities are investigating claims that underage girls were coming and going from his house in Cebu.
· Markle Jr. said he only filmed TikTok videos, and the secretary said the investigation team checked his TikTok account but no underage girls appeared in it.
· The police Women and Children Protection Center is analyzing the devices and is coordinating with the US FBI to determine who owns the mobile phones. According to GMA, Markle Jr. is staying in Cebu, and authorities plan to determine whether he was involved within next week.
■ Notes for residents and travelers
· If you see a situation in which child sexual exploitation is suspected, or you come across such material, do not download or share it; report it to the police immediately.
· When posting photos and videos of children on social media, be careful not to reveal their faces or where they live.
