Angeles: Bike Snatchers, Setup Scams and the Fake Massage 'Takeout' Scam
In one line
An Angeles-based vlogger and a guest talk about common crimes and scams in the city, then the vlogger describes a fake massage-sign scam he heard about last week. Despite the title, the video is mostly about safety and scam warnings rather than retirement.
๐ก Key takeaways
[Motorbike snatchers]
โข The guest names motorbike snatching by two riders as the number one crime. They grab phones in hand and loosely carried sling bags or briefcases and are gone in seconds.
โข It comes in waves โ quiet for a while, then picking up again. Keep a firm grip on your phone and bag on the street.
[Korean man killed]
โข They mention a Korean man shot dead in Korea Town for his belongings. The host says it is very rare.
โข The guest speculates he may have been targeted, or spotted at an ATM and killed after fighting back during a snatching (not confirmed).
[Underage setup scam]
โข An older woman with a young girl approaches intoxicated men, arranges a money deal and goes back to the room.
โข About 10โ15 minutes later there is a knock on the door claiming an underage girl is inside, and the man can be arrested without even knowing. It is described as a scam to take money.
โข The warning: be especially careful about people approaching you when you are drunk.
[Fake massage sign 'takeout' scam]
โข Women sit in plastic chairs on the sidewalk in front of a flashing 'massage' sign, or one at the end of a hallway between two girl bars.
โข A mamasan says you can take a woman to a hotel for about 1,000 pesos for 1 hour or about 2,500 pesos for 3 hours, with anything agreed with the woman on top.
โข After payment, at the hotel the woman says she is sick, texts the mamasan, and leaves saying she has been told to go back.
โข When the victim returned, the sign, chairs and women were all gone. The host heard this story last week and says it was the first time he had heard of this scam.
[How safe it feels]
โข Both the host and the guest, from Minnesota in the US, say they still feel safer in Angeles than back home, though the host says he looks over his shoulder more often.
โข The end of the video (from 05:49) is Steven Bernett's drone footage over the Angeles area with no talking.

๐ฌ What viewers said (7 comments)
โข A viewer who lived in Angeles in 1980โ86 says it is a good place for retirees on a budget but very different from back then.
โข Another says phone snatching should be punished very harshly.
โข The rest are mostly thank-yous.
Angeles is a nice, good place for some people to retire, especially guys on a budget. I'm a retired military pilot in a different tax bracket, so I'm looking to buy a townhouse and at least own real estate. I lived in Angeles in 1980โ86 and it was very different then. I don't hate expats, but I don't like being around a lot of them โ there's something great about walking into a bar and being the only American. I live in Mexico now, with no expats within 20 miles, no foreign tax, and prices don't go up because people know Americans are the best tippers in the world.
Stealing a phone should be a capital offense.
