I was scrolling through TikTok and came across a video of an older white guy, probably in his late 50s, with a young Filipina wife who looked literally young enough to be his daughter. I've heard about this before, and it's not totally news to me that the Philippines is a common destination for men in their 50s looking for a young Filipina wife, but this time it really got me thinking. Of course I have my own critical thoughts about the age gap, especially when the woman is 18 or 19, the legal minimum age where she can date without any issues. But when the comments are all "You don't know their culture" (true, I'm not Filipino) or "She's poor and he's giving her a better life" (yeah, life can always get worse), it makes me hold back from saying anything.

I know you're supposed to reserve judgment about other people, since you can never really know someone else's life. Still, I'd like to know what other Filipinos think. How do people in the Philippines see this? Do you relate to these kinds of relationships, or is it more like "no, that's just gross"? How would her family feel about it? How do relationships with this kind of age gap usually turn out? What do you have to say about it????

Going through the channel, they present themselves as a couple in love, and she's very determined to fight back against negative views. So the comments are all supportive. I don't know. I just want to hear how it all works and what other Filipinos think. I do know for sure that in the US people would 100% give it weird looks.

Barangays with the same name right next to each other but belonging to different cities/municipalities

I noticed this both where I live (my hometown in Quezon province) and back when I lived in Manila: sometimes there are barangays with the same name that sit right next to each other, and people call them by the same name, but they're governed by two different local government units (LGUs). It's pretty weird that the same neighborhood with the same name is right next door and yet somehow separate.

Here in Quezon, when you ride a jeepney, especially going from Lucena to Isabang, you have to say where you're getting off. Is it Isabang-Arias (in Tayabas) or Isabang Lucena? For the longest time I just assumed it was all part of Lucena.

It was the same when I lived in Manila. I only found out later that people distinguish between Zapote in Bacoor and Zapote in Las Piñas when they talk about it.

Does anyone know of other places like this? Same name, same neighborhood, but somehow separate?

New find in Berlin: a first edition of Noli Me Tángere with a handwritten dedication by Rizal

In December 2025, the Philippine Embassy in Germany found this book in the collection of the Central and Regional Library Berlin (ZLB). Until then, it had apparently been an ordinary library book that anyone could borrow. It's a first edition printed right here in Berlin in 1887, and it carries a handwritten dedication from Rizal to Feodor Jagor. Jagor was a German explorer who wrote a travel book about the Philippines, and Rizal had read that book as a student.

One detail I love: the title page inside the cover says it was printed by the "Setzerinnen-Schule des Lette-Vereins," a school that trained women typesetters. So it's possible that young women in Berlin typeset part of the book that shaped Filipino national identity.

But honestly, I can't read everything Rizal wrote. It's in German. I can make out "… Prof. Jagor" and "José Rizal," but I can't figure out the first word(s). Are there any handwriting experts out there?

It's the star of Yankee Bar Street. Filipinos call it something else, but anyway, Koreans call it Yankee Bar. Bar fines are cheap. If I remember right, it's 3,000 or 3,500 pesos. Don't expect much from the looks, and be patient and wait until a girl you like comes around. There are a lot of white guys. Honestly, the atmosphere suits my taste and I go often, and I like to relax over a Mac Dooney and kill some time, but I don't think other Koreans would like it.

Fuel prices confirmed from Tue 11/3 — gasoline up 3.50 pesos, diesel down 1 peso

📌 On Monday, November 2, the Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) announced fuel price adjustments that will apply from Tuesday, November 3 through Monday, the 9th. All grades of gasoline will go up by 3.50 pesos per liter, while diesel will go down by 1.00 peso and kerosene by 1.90 pesos.

■ Confirmed price adjustments
· Gasoline (all grades): up 3.50 pesos per liter
· Diesel (Diesel, Diesel Plus): down 1.00 peso per liter
· Kerosene: down 1.90 pesos per liter
· Effective: from Tuesday, November 3. The reports did not state the time it takes effect.
· These figures are based on the DOE announcement; we could not separately confirm the figures announced by individual oil companies.

■ Compared with Friday's forecast
· Gasoline: forecast 2.90–3.20 → confirmed 3.50 peso increase (bigger increase than forecast)
· Diesel: forecast 0.40–0.60 → confirmed 1.00 peso decrease (bigger decrease than forecast)
· Kerosene: no forecast on Friday → confirmed 1.90 peso decrease

■ Reasons
· According to the Daily Tribune, gasoline prices are rising because of tight gasoline supply in Asia and higher crude oil import costs.
· Jetti Petroleum president Leo Bellas explained that diesel prices fell because the supply outlook improved thanks to the release of reserve stocks and diesel exports from China and Russia. He also warned that global oil prices could keep fluctuating due to geopolitical tensions.

■ Tips for residents and travelers
· If you drive a gasoline vehicle, you can save a little by filling up on Monday, before the increase.
· If you drive a diesel vehicle, it's better to fill up after Tuesday.
· The actual adjustment amount and timing may differ by gas station, so check the price board at the station.

Greetings from Michigan, everyone. I have a question. I'm planning my first trip to the Philippines, and I'm wondering whether I should book a resort or hotel room well in advance of arriving, or whether I can just show up and find a place on the fly. I'm also looking into the possibility of relocating, so I'm really excited.

Just so you know... we're a couple in our mid-50s traveling with our 17-year-old son. It's a trip to celebrate his high school graduation, and he's about to enter the military. So we're not exactly the adventurous young backpackers who go looking for hardship... lol. We'll be looking for places like beach resorts.
