Why are there so many weird foreigners in the Philippines?
In Bangkok, there are really a lot of high-net-worth, highly educated expats and businesspeople.
But most of the foreigners I've met in the Philippines had a few screws loose.
The Philippines is a sewer. There are better countries in Southeast Asia, so why would a high-net-worth person want to stay here, even just as a tourist? Most of the ones who stay are here because of family, odd preferences, or lack of competition
I was literally talking about this tonight. In all my years traveling around Asia, I've never seen such weird people. The guys over 70 get openly pissed off if they spot anyone near them. They're main character syndrome maxed out. They're desperate to be someone special. Two days ago I talked to a guy in his 60s at a pub, and he wouldn't stop bragging about all the women he'd slept with. Bro, please just let me eat my bland pub chicken fingers in peace.
It depends on where you go. If you go to the Bay Area, everyone talks about flying cars, $2 million apartments, robotics, and SaaS. If you go to Pattaya, people talk about the herpes they caught, how she turned out to be a guy, and how delicious mango sticky rice is.
Most of them are retired military guys from the US. You know, the country that really loves war. PTSD is rampant among the people who served that "land of the free."
Maybe it's not that they're weird, maybe you're the weird one. Just saying.
