Why are there so many security guards in a city like Cebu? I've barely seen any actual police, but I see guards with guns. I also see guards without guns, and sometimes guards who don't have a gun but are wearing ammo, lol.
As a foreigner it does make me feel safer, and everyone is always so friendly... but what do they actually do? The most I see is them checking bags in front of malls, and not much beyond that. There are one or two dogs too.
What do they do in an emergency?
They're not just security guards. They help customers, stop traffic when cars pull out, greet people, and pitch in with all sorts of things at the shop they're posted at. Thanks to the guards and CCTV, there's always a witness to whatever happens in the neighborhood. Basically it's like having one more store employee, but way cheaper than police. Guards are probably the most helpful and friendly people I run into on a regular basis.
I don't get what the complaint is. More guards means it's safer. My condo has 24-hour security, and so does the McDonald's down the road, the 7-Eleven down the road, and most restaurants. That gives me peace of mind, and peace of mind is what everyone wants. Guards are everywhere and I'm happy about it.
Security guards in the Philippines do more than in other countries. They get licensed to carry firearms and can shoot if necessary. Petty thieves can't pull off the kind of looting I saw in San Francisco during COVID or recently in Paris. Where I live now, petty thieves can steal anything from grocery stores or liquor stores and the guards just watch, because otherwise they'd get fired.
Because for $10 a day you can have someone open doors. It's a sad situation for people who want to work.
