Wait, what does "spending $2,000 a month in the Philippines" even mean? About a week ago I left a comment asking about monthly living costs here, and one person who replied said that a month in the Philippines costs $2,000. But when I looked into it today, the average rent for a studio apartment is only $327... Even if I round up to $500, monthly spending couldn't possibly reach $2,000. It doesn't add up.
What am I missing?
My plan is to work hard here in the US, save up a good amount of money until I'm in my 70s, and then retire in the Philippines. But the cost-of-living information I've found is all over the place.
To be upfront, I plan to live modestly. The only luxuries that matter to me are internet and a gym membership... and if my health insurance counts as a luxury too, then that as well. lol
I'm Filipino-American.
Thank you.
Alcohol. You forgot alcohol and women.
Some people spend more and some spend less. It's the same everywhere in the world.
If you had a high standard of living back home, maintaining or exceeding it can be more expensive here. If you lived an average life back home, living a better life here can be cheaper. It sounds strange, but that's what I've seen after 12 years in the Philippines.
An average monthly rent place can come with cockroaches. It can mean you spend more money until you find a place you really like. It depends on luck and standards. Some people live cheaply in a rural area with nothing happening and nothing around, while others spend a lot on Western-style accommodation in prime locations.
