Do Filipinos think of Korea?

I'm Korean and have always liked the Philippines. It's a wonderful country with beautiful beaches and great food.

I thought it was only natural to express gratitude, since the Philippines helped us during the Korean War in 1950.

But I've heard that many Filipinos these days don't think very highly of Korea, especially on X (Twitter) and social media, and I can understand that to some extent.

Most Koreans don't particularly dislike Southeast Asian people. They may feel unfamiliar with them, but many treat them well.

However, strange things circulate on the internet.

Some Koreans (not most, but they certainly exist, and it can't be denied) look down on Southeast Asian people.

Those damn YouTube Shorts creators make stupid videos chasing cheap views and create unnecessary conflict.

I'm sorry to my Southeast Asian friends.

Actually, conflicts on the internet have been growing quite large, so I've been a bit worried about Southeast Asia–Korea relations. Many people on our side don't seem to pay much attention to conflicts involving Southeast Asia, so I'm curious what Filipinos and other Southeast Asians think.

How do you think of Korea?

+P.S. I wasn't sure what flair to use for this post, so I chose Social Media.

Many restaurants run by Koreans don't allow Filipinos to enter... in the Philippines. In the Philippines!

> As a country that helped us in the Korean War in 1950 Ha. I've met a lot of Koreans because of work and have been to Korea a few times, and Koreans don't even know that. Instead of gratitude, I've seen them practice racism against us. Some Filipinos are looked down on by Koreans because of their skin color. I've seen my morena/moreno friends (with brown skin) go through it, and I didn't experience it directly because my skin is lighter. Because of K-pop and idol culture, there are Korea fans (koreaboos) in the Philippines too, and since the recent SEAbling vs. Koreans online war, some people learned how Koreans view Filipinos and other Southeast Asians, and I've seen what people say within the fandom change. In general, people who have only lightly encountered Koreans have no opinion about the Philippines beyond Korea = K-pop. Other than that, Koreans are known as racists because of their superiority complex.

A few years ago I went on vacation to Seoul and really liked the nearby palaces and street food. The main event was hiking Dobongsan, and it was nice that ordinary Koreans either left me alone or even struck up casual conversations on the street. I drank with a local who wanted to practice English, and surprisingly, he was the one who bought the beer. As for public opinion, the internet is really a cesspool. I think the racism and classism people talk about regarding Korea has some basis, but it's the same here. In the end, you just have to do some research and see for yourself.
