Maybe I should have held off on opening Reddit this morning.

Gross as it is, it's actually a really heartwarming story. Blood isn't very nutritious, so even skipping a single meal can be dangerous for them. Vampire bats are extremely social, and they do a lot for each other, even adopting orphans.
I mean, that's just how they evolved, unlike most bats that eat other things. So they must have had plenty of food around, or they wouldn't have survived this long.
Yeah, and taking care of each other is part of that survival strategy too.
