Every few weeks there's a frantic post: "I need to make calls or set up two-factor authentication, but I'm already in the Philippines." Has anyone set up a home-country eSIM/SIM while in the Philippines? I've heard Popcorn works for Americans.

I'm not an idiot. I know you should keep your original home-country number because your banks and others know it, and that you should port it while you're back home.

Yes, you can easily buy and set up another country's eSIM while you're in the Philippines. Since eSIM installation works entirely over the internet rather than through physical SIM delivery, where you are when you set it up doesn't matter. What you need for setup A stable Wi-Fi connection: You need to be online in the Philippines to download the cellular profile to your phone. An unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone: Make sure it isn't locked to a local Philippine carrier. An eSIM provider app or QR code: Providers like Airalo, Maya Mobile, Nomad, and Holafly let you buy travel eSIMs from anywhere through their apps or websites. How to do it 1. Buy the plan: Purchase the eSIM package for your destination country on the provider's app or website. 2. Install the profile: iOS: Go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM and scan the QR code (or install directly through the provider's app). Android: Go to Settings > Network & Internet (or Connections) > SIMs > Add eSIM and scan the QR code. 3. Adjust settings: Give the new line a label (e.g. "Travel Data") and keep data roaming OFF on that line until you actually arrive in the destination country. Keep your main local line on for calls and texts if needed. Does that help? You can also port your overseas number while you're already in the Philippines AI has all the answers

Wise now offers eSIMs right in the app

US-only setup?

I think they all have to be set up while you're in the US. I'd love to be wrong, so if anyone has managed to install an eSIM while not physically in the US, let me know

I left the US in 2018 and haven't had a US number since leaving California. HSBC sends 2FA by email, and I run my accounts from here and Australia without a US number.

Before I left I upgraded to an iPhone for iMessage over Wi-Fi, got my Android unlocked, and installed Saily once I got here. I should have done it in the US before leaving, but it was still pretty simple.
