This reminds me of the meme of Squidward eating a burger.
He's actually a giant snake who disguised himself and snuck into the stable.

That little kid has a healthy fear and wariness of horses. Guillermo del Toro went on at length in his Pan's Labyrinth director's commentary about how much he hates horses and what jerks they are lol
Horses are huge, majestic animals, incredibly strong, and easily spooked. Smart kid.
The horse's veins are bulging trying to get that snack, it's not letting go lol

That kid is being so careful - didn't take a single step forward from where he was standing.
He was probably taught to stand on the platform. Horses aren't gentle eaters, and if you put your fingers in their mouth, they'll bite.
