"Super El Niño" warning — Virtually nationwide drought feared until the end of March next year, water conservation urged
📌 During a Malacañang briefing on Monday, October 5, Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. stated that due to the super El Niño, virtually all provinces nationwide could experience dry conditions or drought until the end of March 2027. Noting that the severity of the impact depends on dam water management and conservation, the government appealed to the public not to engage in panic buying.
■ What's changing
· Secretary Solidum said that by the end of March, all provinces (according to GMA reports) could enter dry conditions or drought. The Manila Times reported it as "almost all provinces," so the wording slightly differs.
· Dry conditions refer to two consecutive months with rainfall 21–60% below normal, while drought is defined as three consecutive months with rainfall over 60% below normal, or five consecutive months with rainfall 21–60% below normal.
· He stated that temperatures in some areas could reach up to 38.7°C at the peak of El Niño.
· Secretary Solidum said, "Whether this becomes a crisis depends on how well we manage and conserve [water]."
■ Government appeals
· DENR Officer-in-Charge Juan Miguel Cuna: Do not leave the tap running while showering or brushing teeth; store water in containers.
· Palace Press Secretary Claire Castro: Do not engage in panic buying, as the government is preparing a response.
· Health Secretary Edwin Mercado: Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to prevent dehydration.
■ Tips for residents and travelers
· Setting up water tanks or large containers in condos or houses can help prepare for water interruptions.
· Reduce outdoor activities during peak midday hours and drink water frequently.
· Buy bottled water and groceries only as needed.
