My dad moved out to the middle of nowhere in Louisiana, and by middle of nowhere I mean north of Natchitoches, right next to a swamp. All I got for directions was something like "if you hit the end of the road, you've gone too far," and I went to find him. Anyway... I finally found the house, slept over, and woke up to my dad yelling, "Dang it Earl, stay still!" There wasn't another soul around except us, so confused, I went out onto the back deck. It was a slapdash deck thrown together from pallet wood and paint cans. Who on earth is Earl? "My dog. He came with the house. The previous owner comes by to feed him, but he didn't make it this week." Sure enough, there was Earl. Not a dog but a nutria, a 30-pound one, waiting for breakfast, and my dad was trying to pet the damn thing. Louisiana really is a land that time forgot.
