Hi everyone, my wife and I are planning to retire in the Philippines next year. My wife holds dual citizenship. I have a question: do we need to buy a return (round-trip) ticket, or is a one-way ticket okay?

If you travel together, you don't need to buy one. When you arrive, you get a one-year Balikbayan visa. Bring your marriage certificate.

In principle you don't need one, but I've heard of someone who was denied boarding and missed the flight because the airline staff didn't know the Balikbayan rules. So print out the rules, and have a refundable ticket or a cheap one (a $16 "onward ticket") ready to show just in case. I think of it as cheap insurance.

Is your wife traveling on a Philippine passport? I understand that if it's a passport other than a Philippine one, the airline requires at least an onward ticket.

I was born in the Philippines and I'm a naturalized US citizen. I planned to stay in the Philippines longer, so I only bought a one-way ticket, but I wasn't allowed to board. They asked for my birth certificate and my old Philippine passport, but who carries their birth certificate around everywhere? So look into the information more before you buy a one-way ticket.
