I have a question about US income tax when you're retired and receiving Social Security plus whatever is in your retirement plans.
How do you file your tax return? Do you even need to file at all? I've never seen any videos on this topic.
TurboTax.
As long as you're a US person, you need to file a tax return, unless you're so desperately poor that you fall under the minimum. You do it the same way you always have. If your finances are super simple, you just file online like usual. If they're crazy complicated, you upload everything to your tax professional (CPA, tax attorney, EA, whoever), and they file online on your behalf. Basically, nothing changes. If you always carried a box of papers to Aunt Sally to fill out the forms for you, now you just scan those papers and send them to Aunt Sally.
'50% of Social Security is federally taxable.' Add that 50% to your other income, and if you're single and under 25K gross income, you're not required to file a federal return.
Try filing remotely this year so you get comfortable with it. My tax guy is just across town, but I haven't seen him or been to his office in two years. Start moving everything to paperless now, and it won't feel weird when you leave.
US Social Security isn't taxed in the Philippines. Basically, you file taxes in each country for the income from that country.
