VPN help, please..
I just installed NordVPN and now I'm stuck on how to use it. Back home (USA), I watch a lot of different news (FOX, NewsNation, CNN, etc., all on YouTubeTV). But in the Philippines I can't get it. In "simple" terms, I want to open YouTubeTV on my iPhone and watch my shows. I've set my location (Denver), so do I just open the YouTubeTV app on my phone now, or what? Old dog here trying to learn a new trick.

How YouTube TV checks location
Phill Kane7

Yes, YouTube TV works with a VPN, but it's one of the hardest streaming services to get around. It works well for general streaming or getting around ISP throttling, but using a VPN to stream local sports channels or watch content from outside the US means getting past specific location checks. How YouTube TV figures out your location YouTube TV checks up to four kinds of data to verify where you are: 1. IP address: A VPN changes your IP address to match a particular city. YouTube TV actively blocks IP ranges known to belong to VPN data centers, which can trigger a "YouTube TV VPN proxy detected" error. 2. Device GPS (mobile): On phones and tablets, the YouTube TV app makes the device report its actual GPS coordinates. If your IP says Chicago but your phone's GPS puts you somewhere else, playback gets blocked. 3. Home area rule: YouTube TV requires your account to "check in" from your home area at least once every 90 days (every 30 days for MLB channels). 4. Browser and location data: Desktop browsers pass along location through HTML5 location services or saved location cookies. Best approach by device Smart TVs and streaming sticks (Apple TV, Fire Stick, Roku): Difficulty: Easiest. Smart TVs don't have GPS chips. Connecting through a major VPN app (NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, etc.) on Android TV or a Fire Stick changes the IP cleanly, so getting local network access is simple. Computers (Mac and Windows PC): Difficulty: Moderate. Clear your browser cookies and cache before opening YouTube TV. Some VPN browser extensions have a location-spoofing switch that matches the HTML5 browser location to the VPN server you picked. Mobile (iPhone, iPad, Android): Difficulty: Hardest. Because the mobile app keeps tracking GPS location, a VPN IP connection alone usually isn't enough on mobile unless you also spoof GPS (mainly possible on Android) or watch through a mobile web browser with location permissions turned off. Fixing common VPN errors If YouTube TV shows a proxy error or blocks playback, try these: 1. Switch servers: Disconnect and reconnect to a different server in the same US city. Good streaming VPNs keep refreshing their IP ranges to stay ahead of blocks. 2. Clear cache and cookies: YouTube TV often stores old location flags in your browser cache. 3. Use a dedicated IP or SmartPlay: Features like NordVPN's SmartPlay or ExpressVPN's Aircove router setup help reduce IP flags on streaming devices. 4. Update your home area settings: If you're traveling long term, make sure your YouTube TV account's "Current playback area" is updated in your profile settings.

Yes. Set the location to where you want to be and carry on as usual

Try another VPN

Only use ExpressVPN. All the others get flagged after a few times

Put it on the router

Use Nord, but set it up on your router, not the device

I've used Nord here for years with no problems. Set it to the Philippines - better speed, fewer problems!
