Back when American celebrities were still embarrassed to openly shill for corporations at home. Those were the days.
Charlie Day from It's Always Sunny once confided in John Malkovich that doing a commercial felt like "selling his soul." Malkovich replied, "You're not selling it, you're renting it."
"Like a whore, Charlie. Like a whore."
The Cup Noodle company was like, "We made too much money, let's hire Conan to pound some dough"
That gluten might be a little overdeveloped.
Fun fact: back in the day a lot of famous American actors appeared in Japanese commercials, and there was even a word for it: Japandering. The idea (and the contract) was that the ads would only run in Japan and never be shown in the US, so the actors wouldn't get a reputation as sellouts. Ironically, now we can all see them :)
