How strict is customs about pasalubong over the 10,000 peso limit? Is it safer to declare it and pay the fees on arrival?

Just in case you say the word out loud to anyone: it's pasalubong (pah-sah-LOO-bong), not pasabalong.

They confiscate pesos from seafarers and OFWs coming in all the time, so they'd have no problem taking yours. But not many foreigners bring in large amounts of pesos, so you should be fine.

If you're bringing a lot of brand-new items, shipping them in a balikbayan box is safer. If you'd rather carry them, leave the boxes behind so they don't look brand new. Customs here is corrupt
