McAfee is a virus pretending to be an antivirus
That's true of pretty much every antivirus these days. Plus, running a second one alongside Windows Defender does more harm than good.
Yeah. The only reason to use antivirus is when you manage a company network and basically need to pass audits and cover yourself if things go wrong. When your datacenter gets encrypted (and that can happen even with antivirus โ it's not like the antivirus will stop it) and someone asks what preventive measures you had in place, you really don't want to say 'we didn't install any antivirus, it's a virus anyway' :-D But other than that, they're useless. They won't stop the problems.

And what about the harm it does? Like slowing my PC to a crawl while doing nothing more than Windows Defender?

Even McAfee (the man) wants you to uninstall McAfee (the virus).
You can tell when someone doesn't really understand computers โ they don't recoil in horror at the mention of the name. Just use Avast, it's free and does the job with no drama โ I've used it for almost 20 years
Avast isn't good, in my opinion. It's in the same category as Norton and McAfee. Bitdefender, Malwarebytes and Kaspersky (paid) are good.
