Norm Macdonald: Were you expecting a joke?
I don't think I'd ever know whether I was having a serious conversation with Norm Macdonald.
Well, at this point you can probably assume it's serious
Dead serious.
I had a coworker like this. He was hilarious if you were in on the joke, but he never really switched it off. So most people just thought he was a weirdo
The man's timing was pretty brilliant
My favorite is the time on that show when he was talking about people on their deathbeds going โoh, poor meโ and begging for sympathy. He said if he was dying, he wouldn't tell anyone โ he'd just surprise everyone by being dead. Six months later he died. He was already sick when he said it, and he played it off like a joke.
We didn't even know he was sick
My mom works in the medical field, and one day she said, โSurgeons just have no creativity.โ I looked at her and said, โI kind of don't want them to.โ
The guy showed up to exactly one roast in his life, told nothing but bargain-bin joke-book insults, and is still in the top 10 roasters of all time. Norm was on a whole other level.
The interviewer deserves props for setting up the punchlines
