I'm a dual citizen currently living in California. I'm planning to retire at 63 and move back to the Philippines. I need some advice about Medicare Part B. If my husband and I live in the Philippines we won't need Medicare, but is there any way to avoid the penalty later if we decide to go back to the US? Thanks for your advice.

Use it in Guam

If anything serious comes up, fly to Guam. It's American soil, so you can use your Medicare there. It's a 4-hour flight, about $500 round trip. Make a trip of it and look around for a few days — the local hotels and restaurants are really cheap.

Nope, and it gets more expensive the longer you go uninsured.

Keep your Medicare Part B. You never know when you'll get sick as you age. Guam is a 4-hour flight from the Philippines. Don't do something you'll regret later. Think about your health first, not the premiums you'd pay or save.

Medicare only works in the US.. In the Philippines you need to register and sign up for PhilHealth.

If your husband is retired military, he'll lose Tricare if you drop Medicare.

I'm 71 and have been retired for 17 years. I live alone in Texas. I'm Filipino but have no plans yet to go back to the Philippines for good. I just visit every year.
