The custom of bowing in the Philippines
I've been coming and going from the Philippines for two years now. I'd only been to Taiwan once, but this time I spent almost two weeks there and was surprised by how much bowing goes on. After that, I really started noticing the slight bows in the Philippines, mostly from service workers. I think I instinctively bow back. Is there ever a situation where I actually have to bow? There isn't, right?
It's literally this meme.
The Philippines isn't East Asian. It's kind of like a distant cousin of Latin America, so it's closer to them than to most of its neighbors.
They don't bow the way you'd see in other Southeast Asian cultures... it's very slight, closer to a nod.... Or you might see kids take an elder's hand and bow their head to touch it, or people humbly walking past with their heads lower than yours out of respect... but it's not a traditional bow. So no, you don't need to bow.
You're supposed to pat them on the head when they do that.
If you go to church, you should bow slightly when the priest comes in. Same when you see elders in your community. But we don't really expect it from non-Asians or the younger generation.
The H&M staff bowed when I was there...
