Shipping a 40ft container from Los Angeles to Manila: any recommendations or experiences?

My family and I are dual US/Philippine citizens moving from Los Angeles to Manila, and we're planning to ship our household belongings in a container, probably a 40-footer.

For those who've done this: which shipping company or freight forwarder did you use, how much did it cost, and would you recommend them?

Did the company handle Philippine customs, or did you hire your own customs broker? I'd also appreciate any customs broker referrals, tips, or unexpected costs to watch out for.

Thanks!

Just buy new

Apart from things with sentimental value, I'd suggest just buying everything new when you get here. It's probably cheaper than shipping all your stuff from the US.

Don't ship it

Between shipping, customs, taxes and under-the-table payoffs, you could furnish a whole house with brand-new furniture and appliances for less. Plus all your appliances are 110V, which has workarounds but is a real pain.

I can't believe furniture from LA is better than the gorgeous handmade real-wood pieces in the Philippines. I'd sell all your stuff and buy new.

Customs nightmare

I only had really bad experiences shipping a 20ft with all our belongings, and customs screwed us. They just wouldn't release it, and it took our VA cash lump sum, separate from the shipping cost. If you do go ahead, put all the good stuff in the back half and the old junk in the front. They'll cut the international shipping seal to look inside, and you can guess the rest.. You need a broker, and they work hand in hand with customs... Good luck

I've used Santa Ge for shipping to various countries. Always very professional
