Foreigners in the Philippines are some of the strangest people you'll ever meet
First off, I'm not complaining. It can even be fun and keeps things from getting boring.
I've already met close to 10 people here who are weirder than anyone I've met in my whole life in the US.
Even if they seem fairly normal at first, their true nature comes out eventually.
They tell the most outlandish stories, a few turned out to be scammers, and the worst of the worst are into illegal stuff I won't get into here.
I suppose it makes sense that they'd go somewhere nobody's likely to fact-check them, where their secret missions won't show up on Google anyway, and where nobody knows them personally to say otherwise.
One guy owned several stores and had sons making huge money back in the US, but needed a big loan from me. (Makes sense, right?)
Another guy kept telling me how rich he was, but when it was time to pay the bar tab he had zero money. Security walked him to an ATM, he paid part of the bill, and only then did they let him go.
Never a boring day in the Philippines!
You're describing 99% of this sub
Sounds like you're meeting alcoholics in bars, which could be a big part of it.
I was just talking about this at a pub in Cebu. I'm in my 30s, and I see these guys in their 60s and up making TikTok videos with young girls.. in public. I mean, do what makes you happy, but whatever happened to being a gentleman or having a little dignity? I rarely use this word, but I'm truly flabbergasted by these people. And it's not just Americans doing this. I've seen Europeans and Aussies here doing the same. I guess to each their own….
I think I've met more Navy SEALs than there are Navy SEALs.
Hahaha, well, I'm somewhat in that category. Zero ties back home, and very few people there know where I live. I worked my butt off running restaurants for 10 years, and when Covid came around I started getting angry. I made decisions based purely on keeping my employees paid, and it came back to bite me. I decided to stop paying taxes. The way the government structured the SBA loans was total BS for most small businesses. So... if I ever re-establish myself in the US, I'll have to deal with a mountain of debt. Not happening. Besides, I don't agree with what the government does with our tax money. Screw them and their endless oil wars. Screw Isra-hell. I'm definitely weird, but life is life, right? I'm 54, my wife from here is 50, we chill at our place and just enjoy our retirement. You'll never see me at a club. In fact, you'll never see me at all. Secret society of expats.
Says the same guy who posted "3 signs you picked a faulty Filipina" earlier. Seems you see bad people everywhere.
I met a pretty wide range of people there, from the really interesting to the truly deplorable. What I tell people back in the States is to go to an American Legion and look for the grossest person there. That's your average foreigner in the Philippines. They're usually kind of fun after about nine beers, though.
