Found on our yard/property. We found a cobra, about 4 feet long, so is it a young one? I saw it before it saw me. I poked at it with a long 10-foot stick, and it instantly got defensive and spread its hood. What's the right way to deal with something this dangerous? There are toddlers in this neighborhood. (Valencia City, Bukidnon, Mailag address) Are there snake handlers who remove them? How common are cobras?
I used the stick to steer it off our property, but when I told the neighbors about it, they got angry that I didn't kill it. Should I have?
Yes, you should kill it before it kills you.
Go to the local DENR office so they can capture and relocate it You did the right thing by not killing it. Don't listen to knee-jerk reactions from people with no knowledge of or concern for wildlife and nature.
Cobras in the Philippines are among the most venomous snakes in the world. They can spit venom accurately and hit targets 10 feet away. They aim for your eyes. True facts. Be careful.
I'm disappointed that you'd have to kill such a beautiful creature. I have a feeling there are people who know how to trap them and release them into the wild some distance away...
The Philippines has several species of cobra, including spitting cobras and the king cobra. Don't go looking for trouble, but if you see one and can do it safely, kill it. My brother-in-law was bitten by a brown rice paddy cobra and died while working our rice fields. A few days later my father-in-law found a complete shed skin in the same spot. I can't say for sure it was the same snake, but I have the skin. It's about 4 feet long, definitely big enough to be a killer. Stay safe out there
Philippine law is very similar to Australian law. It's actually illegal to kill a cobra or any other wildlife species under Republic Act 9147. Exception: an animal may only be killed if a person's life or safety is in immediate, direct danger and there's no other way to escape or avoid the threat. I got this information from Google.
