Irony at the police station

I had to spend about two hours at the police station today because of a malicious mischief (property damage) case they're filing for me

While I was there, two guys came in, one with bandages on both arms. The other guy flat-out admitted they'd gotten into an argument and he ended up stabbing him, and the guy had to go to the hospital. He wasn't handcuffed, wasn't searched.. it was actually kind of awkward having him just stand there after what he'd confessed. In the end he sat down with the victim, they agreed on a financial settlement, and that was that.

Shortly after, the police brought in a guy for shoplifting mayo. He was handcuffed, searched, and put in a holding cell. I offered to pay for the mayo, but apparently that wasn't an option because the store owner wanted to press charges.

So there you have it. Stabbing is fine, but shoplifting mayo is where they draw the line.

Maybe the police didn't do anything about the stabbing because the two reached an agreement that didn't involve charges. They might have been friends or family, and this was just a regular thing for them. As for the shoplifter, he might have been a regular thief at that shop, so the owner wanted him properly charged.

I got robbed in the Philippines. But I saw the suspects running back into their house. I went to the police to file a report, and they said I had to go to the barangay first. The barangay took me back to the police. The police refused to file a report because I had to pay first. They wouldn't accept the logic that I'd just been robbed of all my money and belongings. Hours went by, and after the barangay kept insisting, the police decided to arrest the people who did it. They made me go back to the crime scene, which I didn't want to do. They left me in an open police car in an area full of squatters and addicts. They went inside the house and came back an hour later. We went back to the station, and they said the case was solved. Some of my belongings came back. The money was gone. No report filed, because I still hadn't paid. Spent my whole day at the police station .... I just smiled and sat there.... It's a circus.... I feel for the poor people who have real things happening to them

What's the deal with the malicious mischief case?

Same thing in Korea

Kind of reminds me of when I was in Korea. We met a random foreigner, a white guy (we were all white). A random chair in a bar became the jacket chair. The random foreigner accidentally grabbed the wrong jacket and walked out for a smoke. The Koreans thought someone had stolen their jacket, and the bouncer told us to come outside. The random foreigner was gone (guess he really did steal the jacket). The police took me and my buddy to the station in handcuffs while they pulled the CCTV to see what happened. Then a couple walked in arguing and screaming at each other. No handcuffs, but it got physical. The guy wound up and slapped the girl hard. The Korean guy still wasn't cuffed — they just separated them. Meanwhile my buddy and I were sitting there in cuffs watching all of this. Then the cops asked us why foreigners always cause trouble. They checked the CCTV and saw we had nothing to do with the jacket. No apology, just told to stop causing trouble.

Developing world reality

Welcome to the developing world. You may not know this, but there are countries where only 10% of crimes get recorded at the police station. The police know about the other 90%, but not officially, so they don't have to investigate. That's one way an understaffed police force deals with crime. Around 100k serious crimes (murders and rapes) happen there every year, and the records show only 1,000, so the rest don't need solving because they never happened. I can't name the country because the automods here will ban me. Check the crime index from the United Nations. You're in a relatively much safer country, so be happy!
