Why do expat murders in the Philippines never get solved?
Our group doesn't allow news posts, even when expats are murdered. We're not a news aggregation group. But I do have a question, and maybe it's one for the Filipinos here. Why do murders never get solved? 90% of the group knows the Elliot Eastman story (let's not go over how that poor kid died again). The police seem to know what happened and how he died. But arrests? Trials?
There are other times a story is left incomplete. That incident on the side of the road in Rizal? That incident at a bar in Angeles? In the US we'd know how many tattoos the victim had and who they took to prom in 1978.
Filipinos, do these ever get resolved? Why are we only told 20% of the story?
Maybe there should be some news posts in the group? It'd give most of us something interesting to read instead of the usual visas, cheating girlfriends and 'where should I live' 😊
That's why ChatGPT never warned me about Americans getting killed here regularly, or Filipinos celebrating American deaths. Bad for tourism, I guess. Either way, I choose to be here. I'm not a rich foreigner and I don't talk trash about Filipinos, so hopefully I'll live a long life, but if not, I died a happy man.
Well, there isn't a proper forensics lab to begin with. The former top pathologist testified in Congress that the government doesn't, because it can't, do things like DNA testing. So investigations are flawed from the start, since they rely almost entirely on witness interviews.
My late husband escaped an attempted kidnapping (thanks to a brave Filipino who chased the car the whole way honking his horn, which rattled the three kidnappers enough that my husband managed to force the car door open and escape). That brave man got the car's make and plate number. He picked my husband up from the roadside and they went straight to the nearest police station and gave descriptions and the car details. Apparently they traced the car to an army base, and then the trail went cold.
I've always wondered about this too. My take is it's the Philippine media. There's no follow-up news UNLESS the victim or the perpetrator is a high-profile person... e.g. a politician, a celebrity, a very rich person. Most of those cases were probably settled, but we'll never know. By the way... I'm Filipino and I agree with you.
"Never" is a word you should never use (pun intended). Recent periodic reports from the PNP (Philippine National Police) put the murder case solution rate at around 46.83%. That's a far cry from "never."
