Solo trip in your 20s: Thailand or the Philippines?
I'm a Black guy in my mid-20s from the US, heading to Southeast Asia solo for the first time.
I'm torn between Thailand and checking out the Philippines. I'm looking for solid nightlife, good food, and an easy social/dating scene where people are genuinely welcoming and approachable.
For anyone who's spent time in both, which would you pick for a first-timer, and why?
Lived (and live) in both. Without a shadow of a doubt: Thailand!
Thailand for nightlife and food. The Philippines wins on English and approachability. If conversation is your top priority, go with the Philippines. Otherwise, Thailand.
You're getting advice from 50-year-old Americans. Speaking as a 22-year-old, the Philippines beats Thailand for nightlife and the social scene. Filipinos are also a lot friendlier to Black people, and you're less likely to face sexual assault on the street. Instagram pages I'd look into: Pop/club scene: @yespleaseph @manila.mivida @_hdnnights @highsociety.mnl Electronic scene: @unknwn.mnl @apothekamanila @kaputsystemsinc @electric.sala @sado.maso.disco @danza_organika @opodiscoparty
I've lived in both, and still do. Women are more serious in the Philippines, unless you're paying for boom boom. Meaning you'll more often meet women who want a relationship and get serious fast than you will in Thailand. The food scene is better in Thailand… internet/5G is better in Thailand too. The Philippines has prettier beaches that haven't been wrecked by hordes of tourists like Thailand's. Thailand gets 3x the tourists even in a bad year. English is more widely spoken and American culture is better understood in the Philippines than in Thailand. I speak Thai and still get frustrated sometimes trying to explain things to some Thai people. But the foreigners in Thailand can be annoying, because there are so many and I'd guess 25% are morons. So many idiots at clubs and bars in Thailand have tried to fight me for no reason. Honestly, hip hop clubs are where I get the least drama. All my Black American friends who visited me when I lived there now want to live there. Soon I'll be house- and dog-sitting in the US for one of them while he's in Thailand. I'd say be careful in the Philippines — more scammers than Thailand. The Philippines is my home base now, but I'll be back in Thailand for 2–3 months soon. Boracay is a nice place in the Philippines. I'd say Thailand for a vacation, the Philippines for the long term. Just my opinion. Hope you're going for at least a month or so.
Taiwan loves Black people.
I've never been to Thailand, so I don't know the details. Everyone says it's better, and I believe them. There's definitely solid nightlife here in the Philippines, but that means dealing with the Philippine underground. The only real nightlife here is in places that are seriously shady. Also, foreigners seem to have become more of a target lately, and many have lost their lives. The dating "scene" here is just money. Most of the women are looking for a way OUT of the madness here, so it's really easy to meet beautiful women. Just remember: if you meet them in the nightlife scene, they're professionals. If you meet them in the province, they're looking for a way out. Of course this isn't a blanket statement. You could meet a good woman at a club. You could meet a good woman in the province. It's just not the norm. Good food is everywhere.
For a person of color, definitely the Philippines. Less discrimination than Thailand.
