Why Wise is so cheap

I asked here before how you all send money to your fiancée. I'm an autistic nerd, so I tend to dig deep into things most people don't care about. Anyway, I've always wondered how Wise manages to be so cheap. Other companies pretend to be cheap by advertising 'no fees,' but they get you on the exchange rate, giving terrible rates and sometimes skimming 10% or more in markup.

Here's how they actually do it:

Your money never actually leaves your home country! I found this wild, but Wise uses a 1:1 peer-to-peer system. Say you send money to your girlfriend: the money goes into a domestic US bank account. Wise has a local bank account in Manila and uses that local balance to send her the money. That's why when you receive money it says 'you received money from Wise Pilipinas.' They fill the gap with money someone else sent from Mexico to the US. If a particular route gets imbalanced, they lower the fee to encourage more people to send money the other way.

For uncommon currencies, they buy wholesale. For currencies like the Ghanaian cedi, where 1:1 matching is harder, they buy in bulk at wholesale. That lets them skip the expensive SWIFT banking network entirely.

That said, Wise isn't perfect. They're notorious for sometimes being slow, especially if your account history or balance isn't far above the amount you're sending (which triggers manual compliance reviews). They also got busted by the CFPB (the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) for misleading fee disclosures (like hidden costs when using Apple Pay or Google Pay with credit cards), improper exchange rate rounding, and not properly handling error investigations and refund policies when transfers were delayed.

Wise is an essential part of my daily life in the Philippines. I don't trust local banks, so I fund my GCash account with Wise and use Schwab when I need cash. The real exchange rate makes a real difference.

Wise is great. I got banned from Remitly and they never explained why. Just 'you violated our terms,' but they won't say what. I switched to Wise and transfers are faster and cheaper.

Thanks for nerding out on this. Interesting

Which is cheapest?

I haven't actually used it yet, but apparently SoFi now lets you send money to the Philippines with a fee of only 0.5% (for now), and the exchange rate is pretty close, so it could be another option if it works.

How it really works

Yes, in accounting terms it's basically just a ledger adjustment. They hold local bank accounts on both sides. I have a bunch of friends who used to work there. It started because the two Estonian founders had a need. One worked in London earning pounds but had a house back in Estonia with a loan in euros. The other earned euros in some eurozone country but had some expenses in pounds. Instead of converting and transferring money to pay bills, they just did a local transfer into the other guy's account (each had accounts in both places), and the other guy did the same in the other country. I'm honestly amazed nobody did this sooner. It's so much easier than SWIFT as long as there's some demand and liquidity on both sides of the transaction.

Wise is great, but for a while now, when I start a transfer it gives an estimate of about a week. When I edit the source and pick the exact same source it already had, the estimate changes to a few hours or less. Unless it's the weekend. Weekend transfers don't go through until Monday.
