I'm guessing one of these has popped in their faces before.
Even if they haven't, balloons make weird, uncomfortable noises without popping. Then they'll do this song and dance for ten minutes before finally biting the balloon. And then it pops in their face, proving for all time that it truly was an evil, nefarious villain of an object that must be destroyed every time. Gotta protecc the family, you see. It might be loud and uncomfortable for a shepherd, but it must be done.
