My wife and I are heading over for our vacation in November. We each get two checked suitcases. She's already filled 3 of the 4 right up to the 50 lb limit with gifts and goodies for family and friends. Today I asked if she could find it in her heart to leave me room for a few sets of clothes. I guess I'd better pack my carry-on myself, lol. It's worth it in the end, though. The family is always grateful for pasalubong (gifts).
Send a balikbayan box instead and just buy clothes there. Much cheaper.
Last Thursday I was told we'd be flying to the Philippines. My job was to pack whatever I wanted or needed for the Airbnb condos. I got so busy shopping and packing, and had so much pasalubong, that I had to leave some behind because it all went overweight. I packed all the furnishings as checked baggage and all the gifts and pasalubong food in the hand-carry bags. We just arrived with our foreign expat team, unloaded all the bags, and found out I hadn't packed any clothes 🤣
When I visit the Philippines, I never bring anything but shorts, T-shirts and my flip-flops. I can fit two weeks of clothes in my carry-on.
If you're connecting to a domestic flight from Manila, watch out: the max weight drops from 23.5 kg to 20 kg unless you booked it all the way through on one ticket.
When a balikbayan returns to the Philippines, they're expected to bring loads of pasalubong (gifts) for every living and distant relative. Fail, and you're labeled 'kuripot' (stingy) forever! 🤣
