My mother-in-law won't put food in the fridge. Is she trying to kill me?

Rice is the real risk

My pet peeve: 'No, darling, rice isn't okay sitting out in the humidity at room temperature, put it in the fridge.' Cooked rice can contain Bacillus cereus spores that survive cooking, and at room temperature they can multiply and produce toxins that cause food poisoning. It happens to Filipinos all the time, but they just live with it as an unexplained mystery or blame the carinderia. 😂

Poisoning attempt?

The other day I ate something she gave me that tasted *off*. I told her it tasted *off*. She tried it and said 'sarap' (delicious). Later I got the runs. Haha, the joke's on her — she has to wash the filthy underwear now.

Food safety debate

I asked a Filipino friend about this who literally studied food safety as part of her degree in the Philippines. She just shrugged 😁 But to be fair, I haven't gotten sick from the food, so I suspect cooking it thoroughly in the first place is the most important part.

If you know better (and you do), take control and insist the food goes in the fridge. Simple!
