Good day, everyone. I'm a veteran thinking about moving to the Philippines sometime next year. I'm a huge gamer and love playing things like Warhammer, MTG and D&D. Are there any gaming communities there?
Eastwood in Quezon City has a few gaming groups, including D&D. There are also a few card game clubs (Magic: The Gathering, etc.) and even a chess club.
They were playing at malls on the top floor on weekends, though I forget where. Card games are popular here. The community seems to be thriving, but so is card scalping.
I know you're talking about card games and in-person games. I'm more into PC games, so I'll share what I've learned trying to connect with local PC gaming communities. Not sure if it carries over. It's easier to get a VPN and keep your international ties and your connection to North American servers... There are a few people here and there with gaming PCs, but most folks are hooked on loot-box phone games. On top of that, Discord is blocked here... and communities get scrutinized over grooming, radicalization and other rare worries... I'd rather tunnel my connection and keep hanging out with gamers back home. I get enough of the local culture in everyday life. And staying anonymously connected to players from my home region helps with the escapism. Also, do you really want to play co-op with people from a culture where it takes six staff to ring up one checkout? 😉 OK, I'm joking a little. But not really. Culture and cooperation in certain kinds of games aren't the same everywhere. And the people who can afford gaming PCs often have big egos that make them hard to get along with. They're not necessarily the best gamers, just the ones with money for the gear. It's a weird minefield. I encourage you to explore it... maybe find a few people you'd like to play with... keep an eye out for any groups that might pop up... but be ready to drop the whole idea if it falls through.
Follow Cholo Tolentino and his girlfriend Bianca McGuffin (ex-wife of That Philippines Life). She's Filipino-Canadian, and they're into adjacent hobbies, so they could probably point you in the right direction. You could even reach out and ask if they know anyone in those circles in Metro Manila. In Metro Manila you should be fine. Decent-sized major cities should be OK too. In rural areas you're less likely to find groups, and most of those will prefer the local language. Also, from what I've seen there's much more interest in Asian and late-millennial stuff like Pokémon. You see less of the D&D, MTG and Warhammer you mentioned. But again, in Metro Manila it shouldn't be an issue. If you're OK branching into adjacent hobbies, you'll have a lot more options.
