Hi everyone, I've been coming and going for a long time, but now I'm seriously thinking about settling there for good.
My question is about keeping my US bank accounts and credit cards while living abroad. Is anyone using Tello for US phone service and two-step verification?
How do you all get verification codes from your banks and credit cards while living overseas? I'm completely new to this, so any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Never needed verification codes. Get a VPN.
I use Google Fi. The monthly fee is cheap, and once you're here you can pause the service three months at a time so you get no bill. If you need a code, just reactivate, get it, and pause again. It also works in most countries without a local SIM — after a few months outside the US they'll cut your data, but you don't need that anyway
I just got here a few days ago and I have Tello. No problems at all using my US bank accounts and debit cards with it, and no problems with two-step verification either.
For years I played cat and mouse with financial institutions. Mail-forwarding services worked at first; now they don't. VOIP worked at first; now it doesn't. I used a relative's address, which caused problems because it also has tax implications. In the end I went a different direction: using institutions that accept foreign addresses and phone numbers. Now I'm almost worry-free. You never know when things might change. As an example of change, the EU is starting to roll out capital controls. Starting in January it will be against the rules for an EU resident to hold a foreign bank account. For now, EU citizens with permanent residency overseas can still have one. Things can change fast, especially as the West runs into deeper financial trouble. Diversify.
I just opened a Bank of America account because they have a branch in Manila
