Police Drama [OC]
The Venn diagram of actors who play those kinds of roles and actors who say those kinds of things must be empty, or the overlapping line must be super thin.
One of the leads of The Rookie left the show during the height of the BLM movement, over moral objections that the show glorified the police.
Stephanie Beatrice took the stance that police targeting minorities was wrong, so she had her character completely rewritten on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
I've been saying this for years. Police dramas like BAU routinely show that violating rights openly is fine if it's needed to catch a suspect. That's fascist ideology.
Pro-police dramas almost always include scenes where cops break the law to catch the criminal, and it's portrayed as a good thing.
Isn't that true of most shows these days? I watched up to season 3 of Tracker, and that guy breaks the law every episode like it's a habit.
Playing devil's advocate, he's not a cop.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine comes to mind, especially during the 2020 BLM protests. I heard they scrapped four finished episodes because of the George Floyd protests. The show always tried to be progressive, and I appreciate that. Still, it ended up in the category of pro-police content. The show ended in 2021, and I wonder how much the BLM protests influenced the producers' decision to end it.
I think that was the full reason for the timing of the ending. It looked like they wanted to address some issues in the final season, but making that entertaining had its limits, so they had to end it there. Warrant procedures and long trials aren't sexy.
I recently watched some of NCIS season 1, and the number of times they trample on people's constitutional rights to take down bad guys and expect the audience to cheer is insane.
A lot of these shows have an "Internal Affairs" episode, where the people trying to stop the main characters from violating others' rights are portrayed as unlikable characters or outright villains.
