Calls in the Philippines to ease bank secrecy rules in order to curb corruption and tax evasion
If you become a politician, the bank secrecy law shouldn't apply to you. Let's go!
I bet politicians won't agree.
This should only apply to government officials. Otherwise, bad actors in the government could use it to extort individuals or seize their assets. Debanking (blocking bank transactions) is also one of the ways oppressive regimes attack citizens. But it could be useful for keeping government officials from crossing the line, especially considering how well they're paid. So a narrowly targeted approach is needed. I wonder whether spouses and children should be included too.
The law should state that while they hold public office, the bank secrecy law does not apply to them and their immediate family.
