They say the Philippines ranks 10th in the world for using AI tools the most

https://www.visualcapitalist.com/ranked-countries-using-ai-tools-the-most/

It makes sense that India and Brazil, with their huge populations, rank near the top, but several Southeast Asian markets also landed strikingly high. Indonesia ranked 6th with 3.7 billion visits, and the Philippines ranked 10th with 2.9 billion visits.

Both countries come out ahead of larger or wealthier countries like Italy (2.6 billion), Spain (2.5 billion), and South Korea (2.3 billion).

This metric counts website visits, not users. One person can visit multiple times, and visits to different tools are counted separately.

This seems a bit suspicious. China is going head-to-head with the US in building LLMs, so why is it ranked so low?

Population and Regional Factors

Actually, the Southeast Asian countries can be explained by population too. On that list, Indonesia is 4th in population, the Philippines is 10th, and Vietnam is 11th. Indonesia and the Philippines each have more than double the population of Italy, Spain, and South Korea. The exception is Pakistan, but it's also a fairly populous country. Other factors include access to Western AI websites, geopolitical spheres of influence, wealthier economies, and so on.

BPO impact

Besides ordinary consumers, I think the fact that we're a BPO/outsourcing/VA hub is probably a factor too. These industries are now putting AI into their tools and work, so it's no surprise we rank high.

Suspicious Japan ranking

I'm not sure this is a reliable source. I used to live in Japan and am now traveling here, so a lot of Japan-related subreddits show up on my home feed. The complaint about Japan is that it's 'living in 1980 to 2000.' It's true to some extent that most Japanese companies are run by baby boomers who aren't tech-savvy, so they're slow to adopt the latest technology (ironic, since Japan used to be a tech leader). On top of that, there's a risk-averse tendency to want to keep everything as it is rather than embrace change. There are reports that Japan was [slow to adopt AI](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cwymw4434v7o), so I find it suspicious that it ranks this high here.

Unexpected Korea ranking

I thought South Korea would be higher. Their media embraces AI just like the Philippines.
