Paying for tolls
Hi,
Sometimes I take Grab. It's already expensive, but I take it because I don't feel like waiting for a jeepney, or for other reasons. Grab is more than 10 times the price of a jeepney. It's still cheap, but I find it's the small expenses that are dangerous, because unlike big purchases they creep up on you.
Also, a lot of the time I just want to see the scenery, which you skip when you take the toll road.
Sometimes the driver asks, or insists, or just takes the toll road without my consent. Is taking the toll road standard or expected?
Sometimes I feel a bit guilty saying I don't want to take it.
My question is: am I wrong to say I don't want to pay the toll?
If you think Grab is expensive, it's time to pack it in, go home and make something of yourself, because that's just pathetic.
No, it's not normal. When Grab gives you a price, it's based on a route that doesn't use any toll roads. It estimates your travel time from the traffic data at that moment and calculates the fare. Taking the Skyway benefits the driver too, since they get the same fare and finish sooner. But on Grab, some drivers add tolls without telling passengers, hoping they won't notice (more common with passengers paying by card/GCash/GrabPay). Some don't bother mentioning the Skyway at all and only tell you at the last minute, when they're already on the ramp. In those cases, even if they agree to pay it themselves, they add the toll to the fare later, after tapping 'ride completed' in the app.
I'm confused. Are you sightseeing, or going from point A to point B? Because your driver is going from A to B. And you'll generally pay the tolls separately from the Grab fare. But if that little bit of money matters to you, by all means take the jeepney.
My mama said things that cost more almost always cost more than cheaper things, because cheaper things always cost less than things that cost more.
Let's see, in the US I took an Uber to the airport and it was $60, roughly 3.7k pesos. Can't imagine that fare here.
