I've been in Cebu for a year now. I travel a lot, and most months I've been away almost every week. When renewing my visa it's been easy to just tick 'tourist' and list the 6-8 places I've booked for the next 2 months. I can afford a retirement visa, but I'm reluctant to have $15k sitting there not invested, and the tourist visa here is very generous.

If I'm not traveling for a month or six weeks, what should I write on the visa extension form as my reason for being here?

I always put 'Exploring areas for retirement.' I've never been asked why or how long I plan to stay. I've been here two and a half years.

All they care about is that you're not working in the Philippines. Say you're living off your investments/pension/savings (with proof available if needed) and you'll have no problems at all.

I've never had to get a visa since I already have a residency visa. I think I paid for it once; it took 2 years to get and costs about 300 pesos a year to maintain. The only thing they do is charge you when you leave the country, and I've never quite understood how that works. It's usually 500 or 1,000 pesos, and I come back whenever I like.
