Hi everyone! Moving day is getting closer. I'm really looking forward to going to Dumaguete on November 5th! LOL! But I'm not looking forward to that dreadfully long flight!
I'm a bit anxious about going somewhere new where I don't know a single person. 🤣 I'm 38 years old, 188 cm (6'2"), 125 kg (275 lbs), a U.S. Navy veteran. I'm usually the shy person in the corner.
What should I expect the first week? Is anyone else in Dumaguete?
I'm also thinking about moving to Siquijor for a laid-back island life.
I'm looking for tips and advice on Dumaguete! LOL
I'm 188cm and 125kg, an Air Force veteran, and I'd tell you to bring extra shorts and t-shirts. Online you can find 3X and 4X sizes no problem, but not the tall-man (LT) cuts, so the lengths don't work. We live up in Valencia, just outside Dumaguete. Dumaguete has a lot of expats and US veterans. Game On by the beach and the Hillside up in Valencia are both good places to meet other foreigners. Don't rush into a long-term lease. Spend a few weeks or a month in an Airbnb and check out different areas. If you like the city and nightlife, Dumaguete is good. If you want it quieter and a bit cooler, the hills in Valencia are great, and Dumaguete is close. If you can ride, I strongly recommend getting a scooter. It's way easier to get around and park than a big car. If you live in central Dumaguete there are lots of tricycles so you may not need one, but if you're up in the hills or outside Dumaguete you'll need some way to get around. Just relax and enjoy yourself, meet people, get a feel for where you want to live for the next year, find a place, and then spend that year exploring the area and decide whether to stay where you are or move somewhere else.
If there's a VFW there, join it. You can get useful info there too. And connect with the older navy vets nearby. Enjoy yourself but always trust your gut. Banks have business hours and ATMs have limits, so don't be that guy. From a fellow Navy veteran
I really love Siquijor. The power goes out often though. You'll probably need solar.
Welcome, enjoy yourself. I'm not in Dumaguete, but I'll share a few carabao joke punchlines. You'll have to come up with the setups yourself. Joke 1 Punchline 1: It's not about having sex with the carabao. It's about riding it into town to meet the girls. Joke 2 Me: I can't do it. Punchline 2: That's because you picked the ugliest carabao. Joke 3: Pretty girl: I'll do anything for a glass of water Punchline 3: Okay, now just hold this carabao still for me. Figure out the setups on the plane.
