I've seen a lot of negative stories about the Philippines, both here and elsewhere (though that's true of most countries in the world). Today, though, I came across some good news in BusinessWorld, a Philippine online newspaper. According to the report, a recycling program will soon start at the Mr DIY store in Quezon City, where people can bring in their trash and exchange it for money. I hope other places will follow suit.
For starters, just put more trash bins around the city. Another simple thing is to stop automatically giving plastic bags for small purchases like a single candy or a bottle of cola. Give them when customers ask, but it shouldn't be the default. Even these simple changes would go a long way toward reducing littering and keeping the city clean.
Individually packaged products at supermarkets are probably the biggest source of garbage in the Philippines. If you're buying a bottle of coffee, why buy 100 single servings?? Why 100 small packets of laundry detergent when there's a big container right there? Aside from the trash, the checkout lines get really slow too. People say it's to help poor folks buy in small amounts, but people buying 5,000 sachets never look poor.
Educating the younger generation is the way to change tomorrow.. Everything else is just reacting after the fact... I don't think I'll see a clean Philippines in my lifetime.. maybe never.
There used to be one at the SM in my area for a while.. There's also a kiosk that pays you for bringing plastic bottles♻️
