I once had a severe kidney infection that made me feel like I was going to pass out, and I could hardly breathe, so I called 911. On the way to the hospital, they used a defibrillator, just like in the movies. It felt like I'd been kicked in the chest, but it was like someone hit the factory reset button: my heart went back to normal rhythm and I could finally breathe comfortably. After a few days in the hospital the infection cleared up, and I went home grateful for medical technology. I wish I could pay those paramedics what they're really worth.

No. A pacemaker speeds up the heart when it beats too slowly due to conduction problems, while an ICD delivers a shock to the heart when it detects an irregular rhythm (usually something like fibrillation), as shown in this comic.
