Makati or BGC?
I've almost finished booking my 4-month trip itinerary, and the only thing left is the last 2 weeks in Manila.
I've never been to Manila, so I'd love your opinions on whether I should stay in Makati or BGC.
Makati is better. It's livelier.
They're not that far apart. Whichever one you pick, as long as you find a place you like, you'll end up going back and forth between the two over the 2 weeks anyway.
Makati and BGC are like two sisters. BGC is the polished, put-together older sister. Her nails and hair are always perfect, she's dressed in tennis whites, she's polite, and she's the type your parents would love if you brought her home. Makati is the troublemaker younger sister. Black eyeliner, ripped tights, tattoos, a nose piercing. She won't send you a Christmas card, but you'll never forget the things you did together. Hope that helps.
Makati has all the good restaurants that are in BGC, plus there are only three places worth visiting: 'Ayala Triangle' (go in the evening and check out the little string lights on the trees in front of the restaurants), 'Power Plant Mall', which is the most upscale shopping center in Manila apart from Greenbelt, and Greenbelt too, with its gardens (and a pond and cats). BGC isn't maintained as well, but it's the second-best place in Manila. Walk along the Green Line, where the restaurants are all lined up. The best place there is 'Burnt Bean', and you'll thank me when you come back later. For proper service, call ahead and check whether a staff member named Marlon is working that day. He usually works afternoons. He's a god of service. Only two pizza places are any good: PST at Ayala Triangle (great toppings, great service, perfect dough) and the Osteria at the I AM hotel, both in Makati (the toppings aren't loaded, but the flavor is better and the bread is the best). Both use wood-fired ovens. The best barbecue you can have in the Philippines is at a small place called 'Sticks' next to the KFC at Makati Cinema Square. I buy their vinegar sauce by the gallon and go there all the time for pork barbecue skewers. You'll thank me for this post when you come back too. Other decent regular restaurants are Mamou and Manam at Power Plant Mall (both have the best service among the chains), and '8 Cuts' is good for authentic American burgers and proper buffalo wings. I can give you this info because I've lived here for 18 months and there's nowhere I haven't been. I spent a lot of money on bad experiences too, lol. It's knowledge money can't buy. Look up the areas I mentioned on YouTube too.
